- Paddle Canada Advanced Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Instructor
Growing up on the shores of Lake Erie, Derik naturally took to the water. On calm evenings he could be seen fishing and during severe winds he could be found body surfing. In 2000, while attempting to windsurf amidst some choppy waves, he was encouraged to remove the sail, paddle out and try surfing instead. After several failed attempts at standing up, he finally caught a wave and was bitten hard by “the stoke.” He was home.
In 2008, Derik packed his longboard, leaving the Great Lakes behind and moved to Vancouver, BC along with his beautiful wife to have readier access to the Pacific Ocean. Since his arrival, he has surfed in many different places including Nova Scotia, Washington, Oregon, Oahu, Florida, California and most frequently, Tofino, BC.
After a knee injury in 2016, aside from skateboarding and walking his beloved Norwich Terrier, Mahalo (Hawaiian for Thank-you), Derik was seeking a low impact activity to keep in shape when away from the surf. In 2018, he purchased a membership with Ecomarine and began paddle boarding regularly. Although not as frenetic as surfing, Derik finds great peace and solace paddling in the wild.
As a Yogi, Derik believes in the healing properties of water and that being out to sea can be a channel to discovering your higher self. He looks forward to sharing the joy of SUP with you and anyone looking to connect with Mother Ocean!
