Navigation Series

Our three part Navigation Series offers an introduction to the skills necessary to safely plan and navigate on a day or multi-day trip paddling trip. These are dry-land, classroom based courses, that introduce the theory behind marine charts (maps), tides & currents and the local marine weather. You will have the chance to learn and practice:

  • determining which nautical chart (map) you need for your upcoming trip
  • finding your position on a chart
  • understanding common symbols and features on a chart
  • using a compass to take a bearing
  • finding out the tide heights at a specific location and time of day
  • determining when is a good time to transit a channel with currents
  • recording and interpreting our local marine weather forecasts
  • using the information gathered to make good decisions on your paddling trips
