Course Description:
This 4-day program provides an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become a competent sea kayak Day Guide recognized by the SKGABC. You must have a solid foundation of paddling skills to enroll and will be required to submit a log book, copies of a wilderness first aid ticket and VHF radio operators license to complete your certification.

What you will learn
- A philosophy of safety that emphasizes seamanship, judgment and personal responsibility.
- A philosophy of leadership that emphasizes client care and incident prevention.
- Techniques for keeping a group together on the water.
- Kayak strokes including edging, turning, draws and bracing.
- Paddling in tidal currents, including ferry glides and eddy turns.
- Navigational skills specific to coastal travel, including chart-reading, use of tide tables, interpreting marine weather forecasts and route-finding while underway.
- How to use a compass and navigate in fog.
- Leave No Trace ethics and techniques.
- Natural and cultural history interpretation.
Prerequisites:
- A reasonable level of competence with handling a single kayak in a variety of sea conditions.
- Comfort and control while capsizing a kayak
- Efficient assisted and solo re-entry skills
- Efficient forward stroke
- Previous sea kayak day-trip required, multi-day touring preferred.
- Basic boat and gear knowledge.
