Ecomarine’s Coastal Kayaking School was established in 1980 to educate paddlers with the skills required to safely enjoy the ocean environment. Our school has grown to be one of the most respected instructional programs in the world. This is in large part due to our dedicated and skilled instructor team. There are many important steps to becoming an ocean kayak instructor.  Please consider this process carefully before beginning as it involves a serious commitment of time and money.

Our school is composed of four ingredients:

·        The instructors

·        The equipment and facilities

·        The administration

·        The programming and philosophies

Steps to Become an Ecomarine Instructor:

  1. Get some paddling experience - This means lots of time on the water - 20 tripping days is ideal. You will need to have taken courses achieving a minimum of Paddle Canada Level One Skills. This training is available through Ecomarine. All our instructors are Paddle Canada certified.

  1. Get your first aid ticket - A minimum 16 hour program with CPR ‘C’. A one week program like the Wilderness First Aid Explorer course is recommended.

  1. Fill in the Instructor Application - Please fill it in completely. Please include any paddling experience you might have and mention where.

  1. You will be contacted for an interview - During the interview we go through your application. You must be available to work June – Sept  including weekends. If you are unavailable during this time – apply another year.

  1. Training - will include four areas:

·        Paddling skills

·        Logistics of running a program

·        Instructional  and coaching skills

·        Product knowledge and sales skills

  1. Scheduling - You must be firm about your availability to work.  All new instructors must be available to work June – September, including weekends.   The first courses you will teach will be our Beginner levels.  The Scheduler and the Trainer will make every effort to ensure you have work.

  1. Observe our courses – Arrange with the scheduler to observe each course you are qualified to teach at least one.

  1. Assist on a course – Arrange with the scheduler to assist each course you are qualified to teach at least twice.

  1. Lead on a course – Arrange with the scheduler teach the course, while a senior instructor observes your course.

Ecomarine is seeking instructors with patience, enthusiasm, motivation, maturity, creativity and knowledge. These attributes will ensure a safe, respectful and enjoyable learning environment for all of our students.

Keep in mind that ocean kayaking is a seasonal job that is subject to last minute bookings, changes and cancellations.  Every effort will be made to confirm your schedule a minimum of 24 hours in advance; however increment weather may cause last minute cancellations to programs.

Thank you for considering becoming an Ecomarine Instructor. We wish you luck in learning. Please ask us where you can fit in and we would be happy to guide you.

Happy Paddling,
